Bitesize Writing 再開の企画として、いろいろな本を Bitesize=1~3 で Book Talk しようというのを考えました。

でも、まずは見本がないとね、ということで、ぼくが見本を見せます。
材料は Mr. Putter and Tabby シリーズ。
ms.mikanさんの Bitesize Writing を材料に、
まず1語から始めます。
次にBitesize≦2、
次にBitesize≦3 でBook Talk を試みます。

うまく行くかどうか・・・　でも、やってみるんだ！
今回はBitesize=1 で！　

全体は ms.mikan さん。
もしこのBook Talkを Bitesize=1 で書いたらこんなかな？ということで、
1語だけを青い太字にしました。全体を読んでもいいし、青い太字だけ読んでもいいでしょう。

Mr. Putter and Tabby MAKE A WISH
1. Good Heavens!
It was a beautiful morning.
Mr. Putter and Tabby enjoyed breakfast.

He was reading the paper.
He looked at the date.
“October 2” said Mr. Putter.
“It’s my birthday!”

Tabby purred.

Mr. Putter thought of all his birthdays.

As a child, he loved birthdays.

A cake with candles.
Balloons.
Friends.

Birthdays were perfect days.

But now, he was old.

He needs a fire hose to put them out.

Too old for a birthday.
Too old for a cake.
Too old for balloons.

He shared breakfast with Tabby, instead.
They had more jam.

2. Can You Wait?
But he wanted more than jam.
“I want one anyway,” said Mr. Putter.

Mr. Putter wanted to get company.
He called Mrs. Teaberry.

He invited her to tea.
“Wonderful!” said Mrs. Teaberry.
“But I have to do the dishes.
Can you wait?”
Mr. Putter said he could wait.

Soon Mrs. Teaberry phoned.
“Can you wait?”
Mr. Putter said he could wait.

Then Mrs. Teaberry phoned.
“Can you wait?”
Mr. Putter said he could wait.

After that Mrs. Teaberry phoned.
“Can you wait?”
Mr. Putter said he could wait.

Again Mrs. Teaberry phoned.
“Can you wait?”

Mr. Putter wanted to say, “NO.”
“I CAN’T WAIT.”

But he was nice.
He said he could wait.

“This is a very strange birthday,”
Mr. Putter said to Tabby.

3. Finally
Mr. Putter thought she would never come.

But finally the doorbell rang.

“SURPRISE!”
It was an enormous cake with lots of candles.

Zeke had a present and balloons.

“Thanks for your waiting,” said Mrs. Teaberry.
“So I could bake a cake.”

He opened his present.

He blew out all of his candles.
It took five breaths.
And Mrs. Teaberry’s hat helped him.

“Did you make a wish?” asked Mrs. Teaberry.

He didn’t.
He had already everything.

They ate cake for days and days.

It was the most wonderful birthday in his long life.

It was worth the wait!

絵がなくて、しかも1語では、ほとんど通じませんね・・・
実際の Book Talk では絵の中の大事なところを指さしながら、1語で紹介します。

でも思い出してください。Bitesize=1~3　は unlearn のためにあるのでした。
わたしたちの頭の中の「文法」を退治するには、相当な荒療治が必要で、
だから、上の太字を見ても、ひどいでしょう？
could なんて、それだけでは意味がないですからね。

でも、意味を多少犠牲にしてでも Bitesize≦3 で無理やり書いてみる意味は
まさにそこにあります。わたしたちの頭の中の英作文を壊すこと！
講釈はいいとして、あしたは Bitesize =1~2 を試しましょう。
実際に Bitesize Writing を見ていくことで少しずつ
Bitesize Writing の意味が分かることを目指します！

講座でやっていたことを思い出しました。
ORTの中から適当に選んで、one wordで言ってみる。
楽しかったですね。

さて、Mr.P&Tの先生のone word読みながら、「こりゃあ、絵がないとさっぱりわからん」と思いました。
絵を思いだしてそれを指差ししながら（想像して）読みました。
そしたら、先生の最後のコメントに同じことが書いてあった。

私には、7か月の孫がいます。まだア～とかウ～とかしかいいませんが、もう少ししたらone wordを言い始めるでしょう。
どんな言葉を発するか？ちょっと観察してみます。それも楽しみ！！！
（他の孫は、観察する間もなく、あっという間にペラペラしゃべるようになってしまった。）
大人もone wordからどんどん増やすと、自然とぺらぺらになるといいのですが・・・
それがunlearnでしょうが、「洗い流す」過程に時間がかかる気がする・・・

講座のBitesize Book Talk、楽しかった！

あれをぜひ講座を見学に来ることができない人にも感じてほしいなあ・・・

Skype を使いますか？　講座の卒業生のみなさんに手をかしていただいて、
絵本を見せながら、絵を指さしながら、やりましょうか？！

うん、これはおもしろいかもしれないぞ！！
考えますね。

お孫さんの観察をぜひお願いします。
そして何かおもしろいことがあったら報告を・・・
頻繁にビデオに撮るのもいいですね。
若い人たちによく言うんだけれど、運動会やクリスマス会のビデオよりも、
普段の様子を延々と撮影した方がいいです。
特別なことをしていなくても、あとで何度でも観たくなります。
その中に、ことばの獲得の経過が入っていたらラッキー、ということで・・・

NPO多言語多読の講座で言う Book Talk はちょっと特殊な使い方かもしれません。

要するに「本に書いてあることを短くまとめること」だとしましょう。
日本語で呼ぶブックトークではもっと内容が複雑になって、
感想を入れたり、解説を入れたりします。

ほかによい呼び名があれば変えますから、意見を寄せてください！

では、新しい試みです。
Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch の Book Talk を以下に貼り付けますから、
みなさんそれぞれに Bitesize=1 でまとめてみてください。
あしたぼくが Bitesize=1 にまとめたものを投稿しますね。

実はMr. Putter and Tabby はちょっと長すぎるかなと思っています。
でも、せっかく Mr. Putter and Tabby で復活を遂げたのだから、
まずはみなさんの Bitesize Book Talk もこれで行こうと考えています。
長すぎる、という感想が多ければ、実はもう一つ手を考えているので、
ぜひどう思ったか、知らせてください！

Mr. Putter & Tabby
"Paint the porch"

It was springtime.
Mr. Putter and Tabby were very happy.
The birds sang.
The sun shone.
The flowers bloomed.

They went to the front porch.
He has a book.
“I will read you a story,” said Mr. Putter.
Tabby liked funny stories.

She waited, waited and waited.

But Mr. Putter wasn’t looking at the book.
He was looking at a porch post.

“Hmm,” he said.
He is looking and saying, “Hmm.”

“This porch needs some paint,” he said.

Then, they went to the basement.
Tabby excited something.

He carried his painting things.
A bucket of pink paint
A big brush
Some rags.

Suddenly a rag got away.
Tabby caught it.
“Good cat,” said Mr. Putter.

Tabby purred.

He started painting.

He began to sing.

His yodel was nice.
Tabby purred and purred.

Suddenly a squirrel showed up.
It jumped on the porch rail.
“Shoo!” said Mr. Putter.

It jumped onto another rail.
“Scat! Scram!” said Mr. Putter.

Tabby started chasing it.
“Yikes!” yelled Mr. Putter.

The squirrel ran.
And Tabby ran.

The next day his porch was very pink.

Tabby was very pink, too.

Mrs. Teaberry walked over with Zeke.
“Oh dear,” she said.

Mr. Putter sighed.
“We will help,” said Mrs. Teaberry.

Mr. Putter went back to the basement.
Tabby followed.

Soon they were putting blue paint.

Suddenly chipmunk showed up.
It jumped on a rail.

And then, Zeke chased it.

The next day Tabby and Zeke stayed at Mrs. Teaberry’s house.
Mr. Putter painted his porch again.
He made the porch a lovely yellow.

The porch was dry.
She arrived with Tabby and Zeke.

Mr. Putter and Tabby were happy.

They were on the porch.
“I’ll read you a funny story,” said Mr. Putter.

A pink squirrel and a blue chipmunk walked by.

They laughed so hard.
They didn’t need a funny story.

きのうの提案にさっそく塩が送られてきました！
「塩」というのは「辛口の批評」という意味で、講座で大変珍重された物です。

実際に講座で Bitesize Book Talk をやって、仲間の講座生にいろいろ批評され、
感心され、塩を擦り込まれたりしたからこその鋭い批評です。
引用しながら、お返事した後で、約束の、ぼく自身の Bitesize=1 の書き直しをやってみます。

今日は塩入りかも・・・・（笑）
まず、"Stir the Soup"でなく、実際にアップされたのは "Paint the Porch"だった！
（ハハハ！これは重箱の隅をつつくようなもの、たいしたことではないけど）

直しました！

実は言い訳というか、こっそり告白があります。
最初はある人の Stir the Soup のBitesize Book Talk を借りて
みなさんに Bitesize=1 のBook Talk をやりましょうと呼びかけるつもりでした。
でも、やっぱり絵がないと苦しい・・・　ということで、YouTubeで探しましたが、
Mr. Putter and Tabby Stir the Soup のページを見ることができる読み聞かせがなかった！
あれれ、と思ったら、Paint the Porch ならばあるということが分かり、変更。
でも、前書きの部分の変更は忘れてしまったという次第・・・

フォーラムを読んで、私も私のBSBTをone wordでやってみました。
やりながら思ったのです。
我々が講座でやっていたのは、「１ページを一語で言う」のではなかったかと・・・
BSBTの一文から一語を選んでいくのはすごく簡単です。
言いたいこと、強調したい単語を一つ選んでいけばいいわけですから・・・
そうではなく、１ページの絵または文章をみて、
それを一語でいいあらわさないといけないのでは？？？と思い始めました。
いかが思われますか？
それには、やはりMr.P & Tは長すぎるのでは？
ORTの字がない絵本から始めるのがいいのかと・・・

そうでした！　1ページを1語で言うのでした！！
すでにできている Bitesize Book Talk の1文から1語抜き出すのは比較的簡単ですね、たしかに。
それに簡単な分、面白味に欠けるかもしれない。
それに、Mr. Putter and Tabby は長い！

それで、長すぎる場合は、Oxford Owl のサイトで見ることができる絵本から始めることを
提案するつもりだったのに、ms.mikanさんに、言われてしまった！
ま、その提案は改めてしますね。
まずは、みなさんにBitesize Book Talk の気持ちよさを感じてもらおうと、
その上で、そこに到達しやすくなるようにORT の Bitesize＝1~3 を来週にでも始めましょうか。

見せたい写真を何枚か選んできて、それをみんにみせながら、
１語、２語・・・と説明を加えていったこともありました。それも楽しかった。

そうなんです。NPO多言語多読の講座では、いろいろな Bitesize Writing と Bitesize Speaking が
ありましたね。
みなさんが旅行で撮ってきた写真をプロジェクターで見ながら、
写真1枚に1語で説明なんていうのもありました。
結構楽しめましたね！　なつかしい。
なんてことを書いたら、mitomiaさんのお孫さんの Bitesize Speaking が印象的だったことを
思い出した！　そのまま英語多読の graded reader になるんじゃないかという感想も出ましたね。

それと、私のBSBTの文章は、すべて「盗む・借りる。真似る」でできてるのではなく、
単語を変えてることもあるし、必ずしも「お手本」になるような文章ではありません。
それから、１語、２語と選んでいくのは問題があるかと・・・・
最終的なBSBTの一例としてあげるのはいいかもしれませんし、それを見て、「私ならこうする」とか
「ここはこう変えたほうがいいのでは？」とかいう批判がでてくるかもしれません。
その「たたき台」になるのは、一向にかまいません。
やはり、１語、２語とbite-sizeを作っていくなら、あくまで実際の本の絵なり文章なりを見る、
読むしながらでないとできないのではないかと思います。

その通りだと思います。
上にも書きましたが、みなさんにそれぞれ実際に好きな絵本を材料に
Bitesize Book Talk をやってもらう－－それがこのトピックの最終目標です。
いまはMr. Putter and Tabby の絵本を材料に、Bitesize Book Talk そのものを
知ってもらう段階かなと思います。

で、きょうは長くなったので、ぼくの Bitesize=1 書き直しはあしたにしますね。
あしたはまだ1文から1語だけを抜いてきます。
いずれ1ページを1語で、という Bitesize Writing を始めます。
